The Dream Of The Gods And Other Huichol Tales
Between 2005 and 2008, I was fortunate to interview the Huichol mara’akame (shaman) José Benítez Sánchez. During these interviews, he related to me some of the traditional tales hidden in his yarn paintings. We spoke about the world’s origin, how the gods were born, and the stories of deer and corn. He told me the story of his initiation as a mara’akame as well. After he passed away, I wrote this book in memory of our interviews.

El sueño de los dioses y otros cuentos huicholes
Entre 2005 y 2008, tuve la fortuna de hacer largas entrevistas al mara’akame (chamán) huichol José Benítez Sánchez. En estas entrevistas, él me contó algunas de las historias tradicionales cifradas en sus pinturas de estambre. Platicamos sobre el origen del mundo, sobre cómo nacieron los dioses, y sobre las historias del venado y el maíz. También me contó cómo fue su iniciación como mara’akame. A la muerte de don José, escribí estas historias en memoria de aquellas entrevistas.
